South Brunswick’s Director of the Office on Aging, Christine Wildemuth, said that the project involves replacement of air conditioning and heating units, which are about two decades old, with new ones that are to be installed on the roof tops. The center would be closed until November 20 because of the use of large cranes and heavy lifting of materials on the property. Wildemuth said that the senior center, located at 540 Ridge Road near the municipal building, has about 3,000 members. Membership is available free of charge, but the candidate is required to produce proof of age and residency to become a member.
The center is used by 200 seniors on an average, who pay a nominal fee to attend exercise, art and educational programs. Wildemuth said that in order to make up for this week’s closure, the center would extend their classes, but the seniors who would not be receiving the lunch meals this week. But the renovation would not have any effect on the meals-on-wheels program as the food would be delivered to the seniors at their residence.
Wildemuth said that if the weather permits, the renovation would be completed this week. In case of an extension, the seniors would be notified on phone.
