The project included the construction of a new state-of-the-art terminal building and the extension of the existing runway which were to be in compliance with IATA’s requirements. The expansion was a two-phased project, which also includes the construction of the new terminal on a separate site between the existing terminal and the aircraft apron and the construction of extensions to the main car park.

The second phase of the project consists of a building on the site of the existing terminal building and further work on a separate terminal that will include car parks and aircraft parking aprons.

Authorities stated that the construction was delayed due to a number of reasons; they said that Phase One was to reach its deadline in the month of November 2009, which has now been stretched to March 2010.

The contractors are hoping to finalize the project by October 2010. The project was scheduled to be completed by May 11, 2010, in time for the FIFA World Cup, which begins in South Africa on June 11, 2010.
