St. Lucie County International Airport’s terminal renovation project will include installation of solar panels worth $150,000 to help offset energy costs.

The project covers a facelift to the terminal facility built in the 1960s, repaving 185,000 square feet next to the building and renovating the customs facility, which was built in the 1980s. Energy efficiency measures will be employed to help the airport save 20% of its energy bill for the two buildings.

The terminal renovations are expected to be completed by early 2012. The $5.3 million multi-phase, multi-year project will be funded by $4.3 million in grants from the Florida Department of Transportation, about $900,000 from airport revenues and $100,000 from taxes on hotel stays.
