The project has expanded the hospital’s current emergency wing by nearly 1240 square metres while also separating it from the University of Alberta Hospital. The new unit will serve pediatric and family-centered care needs.

The new department sports a separate ambulatory entryway for patients and their families. It further features a separate child-friendly waiting room, triage zone, as well as registration space. The triage stations in the expanded emergency unit are more spacious and are equipped with chairs for mother and child.

In addition, the new wing houses a play space, larger restrooms, and has installed ample plug-ins to facilitate electronic games and readers. Plans are also on for creation of a new family consultation room, enhanced work area for pediatric emergency physicians, and a trauma room by the end of 2012.

The project has received funds of $21.2 million from the Government with $5.1 million contributed by the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.
