The landmark scheme, a joint venture between Manchester-based property company Peel Holdings and Salford City Council, involves development of a 20,000 capacity stadium for Salford City Reds.

Located on a 45-acre site next to Peel’s Port Salford scheme, the stadium will have a capacity for between 12,000 and 15,000 people across four stands with room to expand to 20,000 capacity. The stadium will feature two community pitches, main playing surface, community changing facilities and parking for 500 cars and 20 coaches.

The stadium will have an area designated for standing supporters, a situation not allowed in British football following the Hillsborough disaster in which 96 Liverpool supporters died. This partial-standing design is similar to the Halliwell Jones Stadium, home of Warrington Wolves.

The City of Salford Stadium is designed with cover on all four sides. One side and both ends will be seated, and the other side will include an area for supporters who prefer to stand.

The stadium is scheduled to be completed in 2012.
