The Andaz London Hotel has unveiled their interactive design installation for Christmas and New Year. The art work called, A Very East London Christmas, is a celebration of the heritage of the neighbourhood in which the hotel is based.
As a recreation of London’s Bow Bells the hotel wishes to depict the famous icon of a true ‘East London Cockney’…word has it that you’re a true cockney if you're born within the sound of the Bow Bells.
Sevens bells are suspended across the hotel lobby and lounge area, and created using bright neon Perspex. Each bell is customised to depict its own East End personality, etched with historical drawings that are influential to the local area.
The bells chart the history of the area paying homage to the architecture, markets, fashion and art scene of the district, as well as, the local people, including Cockneys, the Krays and the East End Suffragettes.
The largest bell of the installation, spanning two meters wide, represents London’s famous architecture and skyline, featuring the iconic Gherkin and St Paul’s Cathedral.
General Manger Otto Steenbeek said: ‘At the Andaz London Liverpool Street, we want every guest to be able to experience the incredible vibrant culture of East London from within the hotel. This interactive installation achieves this by bringing the area’s unique history and personality into the heart of the Andaz as well as spreading Christmas cheer.’
An easy way to get involved and celebrate the unique character of East London is by using the #SoEastLondon hashtag and tweeting @AndazLondon. No matter where you are in the world real bell chimes will ring.
