The renovation project will add functional and safety improvements, new features to the library as well as serve the changing needs of the customers.

Updating the worn and outdated infrastructure of the current library building, which is nearly 50 years old, the renovation will upgrade the mechanical and electrical systems, and traffic patterns among other things.

Designed to offer more efficient use of space, the renovated library will feature main entrance off newly opened West Fifth Street. It will also have provisions for multilevel parking garage for approximately 130 cars, café with outdoor seating and trees for shade.

In addition to that for conducting various types of events, the renovated library will feature garden district for outdoor events and programs, featuring a screen for presentations and ability for secure access, event space with hearing-assist technology for public programs and presentations, and a new auditorium/education centre with hearing-assist technology.

Other additions of the renovation include a technology-intensive lab, which will allow people of all ages to create both digital and physical items, small and large group study and meeting rooms, and various additional improvements such as increased reader seating and lounge furniture. In addition to that Fifth Street will be extended to provide access to a new Aloft Hotel being constructed to the west.

In order to make the library environment-friendly as well as sustainable, the renovation will install new high-efficiency, state-of-the-art boilers and chillers, chilled beam induction HVAC system and provide for the reuse of current cooling tower and cold-plate heat exchanger.

The electrical system upgradation of the library includes the replacement of obsolete, original equipment with new main distribution panels and sub panels, installation of new high-efficiency florescent and LED lighting to replace obsolete florescent and incandescent lighting, and integration of lighting controls into building management system.

Apart from that the electrical system upgradation also includes the use of daylight harvesting and occupancy sensors, lighting of book stacks and raised-floor access system for electrical and data distribution to offer better flexibility of spaces.

The other upgrades to the library includes rainwater harvesting/storage system for use in lawn irrigation, new building energy management system, modern fire alarm system, low water consumption restroom fixtures, and new insulated glass windows with thermally broken aluminum frames. Apart from that the renovation also includes installation of an additional elevator for public use, additional roof insulation and new roof.

Targeting for LEED Silver Certification, the renovation project is scheduled to begin in September 2013 and will take approximately two years to complete.
