The current $50,000 renovation is the first for the Heritage Room since the stadium opened in 1967. The T-Bird Stadium renovation will reach completion with the refurbishment of the Heritage Room, converting it into a social room for half time and post game gatherings. The Heritage Room currently serves as a meeting room for the varsity football team.
The scheme has upgraded audio-visual systems in the facility. New floor has been installed thanks to a grant from David Sidoo, a former Thunderbird.
The renovated T-Bird stadium also features one of the largest turf fields in the world. The 120,000 square feet surface was the major anchor of the facility’s $1.8 dollar refurbishment. The new turf is designed to be suitable in all weather conditions, when compared to a traditional grass field. British Columbia-based sport contracting company Centaur Products has installed the ‘Polytan’ surface for the turf. The new turf also reduces the use of water and fertilizer, thereby increasing the sustainability of the field.
The 3500-seat stadium is the home field of the UBC Thunderbirds, the athletic teams that represent the UBC.
