The building will be UMass Boston’s first academic building in 40 years and is part of a 10-year, $700 million effort to renovate the Columbia Point campus. The 220,000-square-feet high-security building will span five stories.

The building will house undergrad biology teaching labs, a center for personalized cancer therapy, a developmental sciences research center and research labs and support labs for chemistry, physics and psychology. The front of the building will be made of glass and limestone, and will be designed to be more reflective of the Campus Center at the opposite end of the campus. A meadow featuring an amphitheater will connect the two sides of the building.

The building is funded through the state’s Division of Capital Asset Management and the UMass Building Authority. It will open in late 2013.
