UMHS’s $17.7 million ED refurbishment plan is approved by the University of Michigan Board of Regents. The size of the ED will be increased from its current size of 35,153 square feet to a total of 41,015 square feet. The space will be expanded to include 26 treatment bays, six enclosed triage rooms and two family consultation rooms.
The design of the facility will aim to reduce the waiting time for patients. The ED will be expanded into adjacent areas nearby on level B1 of the university hospital. In order to accommodate the expansion, internal relocation of other departments will be carried out. The hospital dentistry program, currently located near the emergency department, will be relocated to a 6,400 square feet space on the second floor of the Medical Inn Building. Psychiatry Emergency Service will be shifted to an area adjacent to the ED.
The renovation will not result in the physical expansion of the hospital and no parking area will be lost. The project is expected to be completed by late 2012.
