The project aims to highlight the amount of ‘usable’ scrap that goes into landfill each year, which could be reclaimed and recycled to give it a new lease of life. The centrepiece structure of ShelterBox will be built using approximately 10,000 disused tent poles donated by ShelterBox and other salvaged materials from Cornwall Scrapstore and NISP. The Bedouin style hotel is being designed by UK-based ‘Expedition Engineering’, company which is also behind the velodrome for the 2012 London Olympics.

The one night hotel will be designed to provide ‘under the stars’ night experience with some elements of eco-luxury. The hotel ‘lounge’ is being furnished by Fresk, a collaboration of major Cornish social enterprise ReZolve, Boex 3D Design Solutions and Leap Media. Design and layout is being provided by Sam Boex and Leap’s Matt Hocking. The lounge will showcase the new Fresk concept that will supply businesses across Cornwall with environmentally sustainable furniture and interiors.

The fabric of ShelterBox is being designed using reclaimed fabrics, sheepskin off-cuts, ribbon and other materials by fashion and textile designer Georgina Von Etzdorf with Elsie Pinniger from Newquay-based Neon Wetsuits.

The project has gathered donation of amenities for guests such as socks from ethical local clothing store Finisterre, Crabwood & Lemongrass soap from Trevarno Skincare in conjunction with Pro Natura UK and a hamper with some goodies from the Eden Project shop.

The ShelterBox Hotel will be open to the public from 2-3 March 2011.
