The work would represent the first major renovations to the auditorium since it opened in 1946. According to the Rhode Island Convention Center Authority, which manages the facility for the state, work will be executed in stages.
The renovation and expansion project includes a glass-enclosed addition on the side of the building overlooking Interstate 95. The 12-foot-wide addition will include a new loading dock, walkway connecting the rear of the auditorium to the lobby, and additional restrooms. Other improvements include renovated backstage dressing rooms and expanded concessions facilities along with upgraded lighting and sound equipment for the main stage.
Work will also include construction of a way for trucks to deliver shows at stage level; indoor access between the backstage area and the front lobby; and to provide more bathrooms, lobby and office space, covered fire escapes, a club room and a place for patrons to sip wine during intermission.
Backstage work will be carried out first. The construction of the addition will occur during mid-2012 and 2013. This is being done to allow the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and Festival Ballet Providence to maintain their usual season schedules.
Funding for the project will come from Rhode Island Capital Plan Fund. The state approved the multi-year project in 2009.
