The underground screening level includes 121,700 square feet security mezzanine level that house two checkpoints. The new level is positioned underneath the new baggage claim area, which is located on the back side of the building. New escalators are installed to carry passengers to the area.

The terminal now features new security areas at opposite ends, and includes space for 32 security lanes. The security areas have been integrated with skylights and high ceilings, imparting it a spacious look.

The airport expansion is part of the capital construction program that has added more than $3 billion in improvement to Dulles since 2000. Under the program, the airport opened its fourth runway, and has also added parking garages and a traffic control tower.
