Comprising the most significant part of Waikato District Health Board’s $430 million building and service redevelopment programme, the $130 million Meade Clinical Centre is named after Dr. John Anthony Meade who began his service to Waikato Hospital as assistant superintendent.
The five-level building spans 39,000 square metre and links directly onto the Hague Road car park at three levels. It features a 11,340 square metre (or approximately one-and-a-half rugby fields) of outpatient area. To provide immediate care and treatment to the patients, the new clinical centre features Interventional Suite, Same Day Admissions Unit and additional theatres.
The 100-room centre also features a Critical Care Unit, which includes a 15-bed Level III Intensive Care Unit (ICU), providing observation, care and treatment for patients of all ages with life threatening illnesses and injuries; and High Dependency Unit (HDU), which is a 12-bed unit that provides special expertise and facilities for adult patients requiring intensive monitoring and treatment following surgery, trauma and medical or surgical conditions.
Creating a ‘one-stop-shop’ for patients and visitors to outpatient appointments, the Meade Clinical Centre brings 30 clinics together, including dermatology, neurology and plastics, which are among the first clinics to open on 10 September 2012.
Being opened in three stages, the building with theatres and interventional suites (such as Radiology) and a new Critical Care Unit comprising the Intensive Care Unit and High Dependency Unit, are all scheduled for opening by April 2014.
