As part of the reconstruction project, the stadium’s drainage is being improved and the main entrance is being widened. The capacity is being increased by demolishing and building anew the North and South Stands and refurbishing the East and West Stands. The renovated stadium will sport a new roof covering the entire stadium. The stadium will feature new seats, hard pitch, lighting, toilets, and various other amenities.

The 40,000-capacity stadium was opened in 1975. The final of 2011 Cricket World Cup is scheduled to be played at the renovated Wankhede Stadium. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that the massive renovation project started in 2008, will be completed by December 2010.
