The plan includes a terminal or business centre, including an environmental assessment and land acquisition, apron design and further expansion of the airport. Expansive parking lots, revamped runways, and a possible north-south running runway are also included.

Except for the terminal building, some federal and state funding has been promised for the expansion of the airport. The plan needs approval of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for federal funding, post which, work is expected to begin in 2014.

West Michigan Regional Airport is classified by FAA as a National Plan Integrated Airport System. It allows the airport to receive $150,000 annually in federal funds.
