A total of 672m² Flotex flooring has been laid in the main visitor centre where young offenders can interact and meet with family members. The way in which the room is used was a major factor in the overall interior design. It was essential that it not only looked bright and fresh, but also that it was easy to clean and very durable.
Paul Costello, the education officer at HMP Wetherby YOI, said: “The immediate impact of the flooring is huge. Not only does it look good, but it’s also much quieter. The old flooring used to be very noisy with all the visitors talking; it’s great to finally be able to hear yourself think.”

Flotex is a textile floorcovering with all the benefits of carpet such as warmth and sound absorption, helping to reduce the echo within the room. The unique construction of Flotex ensures that it is also easy to clean and maintain a huge benefit in high traffic areas such as the visitor’s room.

For the main flooring area a neutral colour with a small symmetrical pattern was specified. The colour of the flooring, along with the décor was chosen to reflect the mood and use of the room. An added advantage of using this base colour and pattern is that it helps to disguise soiling better than a lighter shade.
