The terminal has been designed by Kansas City-based architecture firm HNTB Architecture in collaboartion with Wichita-based GLMV Architecture. The new terminal will span over an area of 265,000 square feet and will feature 12 gates.
All the areas of the new facility will be designed to allow maximum passage of natural light. It will be accentuated through installation of electric lighting system along with glazing and skylights.
The interior portion of the terminal is provided durability through use of perforated stainless steel wall panels, terracotta wall systems as well as terrazzo floors. In addition, the terminal will incorporate an exhibit to showcase the region’s aviation heritage.
The project will be partly financed by Federal Aviation Administration and Transportation Security Administration grants. Contributions will also come from current fees on passenger tickets and general airport revenue from concessions and leases. The terminal is expected to be opened by 2015.
