The new £22.5 million ($36.8 million) facility accommodates a 450 seat concert hall and a 160 seat courtyard theatre. The theatre also features rehearsal, performance and exhibition facilities for musicians, actors, theatre designers and stage managers.
The new facility is designed by BFLS architects. The building contains a distinctive drum on the north side of the facility with timber and stone finishes and cedar wood slats creating a rippling effect. The performance spaces are conceived as separate buildings, with the drama building forming a new façade and a recital hall placed amongst the woods adjacent to the existing building.
The disparate elements of the buildings are unified by a single, floating roof.
The building is expected to achieve a BREEAM excellent rating owing to sustainable features including a green roof, natural ventilation, and ground source heating and cooling.
