Providing improved access to the hospital and 958 additional car parking spaces, the project will cost a total of £16.4 million ($26.4 million).
Upon completion, the entrance of the Blackpool Victoria Hospital will include a pharmacy, retail units, café, main reception, waiting area and office accommodation. It will be the main hospital access point for most patients, visitors and staff, apart from those using the Emergency Department and the Delivery Unit, who will continue to use present entry points.
Catering to the needs of the public parking and staff with access to spaces on the upper floors, the new multi-storied car park will provide 1,000 extra places. The scheme also involves redesigning of the internal road layout and traffic light controls.
The capital for the project will be borrowed from the Department of Health and paid back from income generated by retail and parking charges.
