The 1972-built Merrylands shopping center is currently undergoing a $400 million redevelopment, which will include the addition of Woolworths & Big W, and an additional 130 specialty stores. The 65,000 square meters, two-level retail redevelopment, is being undertaken over several stages, which will replace the existing 25,000 square meters shopping center.
The redevelopment scheme will feature a substantial engagement with the local town center by maximising external retail opportunities. Construction on the project has been divided into two distinct phases of work. The first phase, including Stages 1 & 2, involves complete center redevelopment and will address not only the current deficiencies but also bring a whole new generation of retailing to Merrylands in such a way that the existing customer base is not alienated.
The architectural design philosophy of the project covers a contemporary language encompassing clean crisp lines with reference to a distinctive, modern Australian ambiance in terms of an emphasis on light and shade through the extensive use of glass and wide angular roof overhangs and louvered edges. Materials and finishes exuding a warm and contemporary ambiance have been specifically chosen for the scheme.
The lead construction contractor for the Stockland Merrylands redevelopment project is Australian property development and construction company St Hilliers. The client is Stockland, a diversified property group based in Australia.
