The new mixed use development on Camley Street consists of three blocks which incorporates 320 student accommodation rooms and 40 two, three and four bedroom properties. The 15,000m2 site, which will improve accessibility between Kings Cross and Camden Town, also houses a retail shop, café and restaurant and enterprise incubator. London-based architect, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM) specified Cembrit’s Metro cladding with the design plan of the brickwork ‘peeling back’ at the corners of the envelope, revealing a contrasting palette of glazing and cladding.

Drylining and façades specialist, Conneely Group installed the cladding onto the new build project and found the material particularly easy to handle. "The cladding was extremely simple to install and cut" explain James Guerin, Project Manager from Conneely Group. "Not only is the product tough and durable, thanks to the range of 26 colours, it also provides an aesthetically pleasing finish which can be used to create exciting and unusual designs. We hope to use the product on future projects."

The new build is due to complete at the end of June 2014 and achieving sustainability status has played a key role in the development. The residential side of the scheme will achieve Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4, meeting and exceeding minimum voluntary standards for energy use and carbon dioxide emissions, water use, waste, materials and surface water run-off. At the same time, the student housing aspect to the development has achieved a BREEAM pre-assessment rating of Very Good, with aspirations to increase to Excellent.

The Code for Sustainable Homes is the national standard for the sustainable design and construction of new homes and aims to reduce our carbon. It measures the sustainability of a new home against categories of sustainable design, rating the ‘whole home’ as a complete package. BREEAM is an environmental assessment method which sets the standard for best practice in sustainable building design construction and operation. BREEAM encourages designers and architects to think about low carbon and low impact design.

Cembrit Metro fibre cement external decorative cladding boards are available in 26 colours. The Metro selection offer a palette of colours from which designers can use options which work together, increasing the possibilities for expression. The standard colours are selected to give designers as wide a choice as possible without being restricted by the manufacturing process. The Cembrit Cladding range offers external claddings in through colour, transparent glaze, semi transparent glaze or opaque surface coating. All of these boards withstand the effects of the weather and are resistant to dirt, humidity or fungal invasion so the façade, it will remain uniformly beautiful throughout its life cycle.
