The Nuffield concept is brand new to the health industry, and brings a more medical-orientated approach to the world of physical fitness. It combines fitness and exercise facilities with services such as health assessments, health education seminars and physiotherapy to help members look after their health on every level. The club now has a clean, fresh and sophisticated spa feel that utilises materiality, colour and lighting to an elegant yet invigorating effect.
Like Burmatex, HCD has a reputation for producing well conceived, innovative and sustainable projects, created by design teams with solid experience and fresh thinking. It has worked with Burmatex and its products previously, but was particularly excited to be able to specify products from the company’s coveted Evolve collection.
HCD’s Shona Munro explains: “This project required materials that delivered both operationally and visually, and by using Scan from Burmatex’s Evolve collection, we were able to achieve this with the flooring scheme. The lines and patterns of Scan, and the scope for creating cutting edge design by the way the tiles are installed, emitted an energy that resonated perfectly with that of the Nuffield vision. The colour range in which Burmatex offers Scan is simply brilliant, and means that the floor of the workout space co-ordinates seamlessly with the centre’s wider interior scheme. It was crucial that all the colours specified worked together throughout the centre; in the work-out space itself we’ve taken the signature colours from the carpet tiles to create different zones dedicated to a certain area of the body.”
Evolve is a seven product, high end specification collection created specifically for the architect and design community. Its colour palettes, for example, have been named with words inspired by city architecture and urban culture, and linear loop pile carpet tile Scan is a directional product that introduces a burst of bright contemporary colour.
Speaking about the flooring installation, Burmatex’s brand manager, Becky Peters, said: “More than just being visually striking, Scan also ticks the durability box. Hard working and long lasting carpet tiles are essential in high traffic, high impact commercial spaces such as health clubs, as flooring tends to take a lot of punishment. Some of the materials traditionally used in sports flooring can be easily marked by trainers and shoes, meaning that it would need replacing more frequently, but carpet tiles go a long way to alleviating this problem.
“Carpet tiles are also favoured for their noise reduction and acoustic insulation properties, as well as for reducing the level of allergens in the air in comparison to hard floors. Carpet fibres retain dust and airborne particles by holding them in the pile so they can be vacuumed away with ease, without them entering the air in a room or leaving them sitting on the surface of a hard floor.”
