Located in Crookes on the outskirts of Sheffield, the detached property was built in 1888. The property has attic rooms and proper insulation was a key consideration in planning the re-roofing project. To this end, the original roof was completely stripped off by local roofing company, Nu-roof Ltd, and insulation inserted between the joints with new counter battens also installed. The property features period details that include original hand-made rippled glass in the windows with original sash frames, so it was important that the new roof would complement traditional features while adding an additional layer of insulation. Glendyne was chosen by Nu-roof and Anne Marples, the homeowner, as the perfect solution for the project.

“I’m very impressed with the outcome,” commented Anne. “The new slates are immaculate – I can say this with confidence because I can see them at eye-level from our rooftop garden. Nu-roof Ltd did an excellent job and we’re delighted with the fact our house now has a sound roof with good insulation that will last for another 150 years. It is also gratifying to be able to respect the architectural heritage of the property while refurbishing the roof with modern materials.”

Glendyne is a high quality slate quarried from the Canadian town of Saint Marc du Lac Long, Quebec, Canada. A dark blue/grey, with a fine, consistent grain and no history of pyrititic inclusions, it benefits from a smooth texture and the combination of modern extraction technology and traditional finishing skills to ensure a consistently high standard product. Able to withstand all weather conditions including sunlight, UV light, and even acid rain, Glendyne is remarkably similar in character to the Welsh Ffestiniog Slate.

Available exclusively from Cembrit in the UK, Glendyne offers great value for money and laid correctly, will last the lifetime of a building. Using skills built up over 80 years, Cembrit select natural slate from Spain, Canada, Brazil, China, India and the countries of Western Europe. From UK quarries Cembrit offer Welsh, Cornish and Westmorland slates. Quality levels at Group factories are rigorously maintained to high standards with fibre cement slates produced to BS EN 492:2004 and manufactured under the control of a BS EN ISO 9001: 2000 quality management system.
