Bisca commissions are truly bespoke. The starting point for our designers is a blank page and your brief. We can give you all the advice you require for your client’s staircase whether it is a new build or a staircase renovation. We will meet with yourself, and your client if you wish, and together discuss plans for the property, including style, materials, aesthetics and functional considerations.
The staircases in this profile are just a small selection of case studies of completed projects. To see more designs please visit the galleries on our website.
The Brief
We originally proposed a steel carcass for this staircase, which the client’s QS persuaded them to swap out for a builder’s concrete staircase as it was cheaper. Unfortunately, when the staircase was cast and in place, it was found that the builder had forgotten to leave room for a balustrade.
Bisca’s Design Solution
Left with a bit of a problem, the client contacted Bisca again. The only way we could make the staircase compliant with building regs was to design a balustrade that we retrofitted to the outside edge of the staircase – and to do this part of the ceiling soffit had to be removed.
Our sweeping balustrade design has hockey stick profile Oak handrails which are both slim and contemporary. The balustrade and handrail run up the staircase and round a tight circular pulpit style landing, before continuing along the upper landing galleries.
If you are interested in a curved staircase design or glass balustrade, based around this project or materials, please mention reference 2169.
We do not recommend cast concrete stairs for many reasons. When QS or self-builders compare the cost of a steel carcass against a concrete staircase on paper, the concrete staircase is the PERCEIVED slightly cheaper option. However, in reality, and in the majority of cases the opposite turns out to be true. Problems encountered on site when a concrete stair goes wrong can be very costly to put right. Concrete staircases never have the elegance of design, finish or precision that can easily be achieved with a steel staircase.
