Building Talk reports that TPS had to prequalify before submitting a Technical and Financial Proposal, for which TPS scored top marks technically. Along with its experienced local sub-consultant, Gibb Africa, TPS will be undertaking all the work in-house.
The company, part of Carillion Group, is responsible for all design work of the new airport, including technical and physical requirements of aircraft operations, all buildings and associated infrastructure plus operational items and equipment that will be required for a fully functional airport facility.
The airport will be located in the Rwandan capital Kigali on an existing greenfield site. However, the site is also remote and utilities such as electricity, fuel and water will need to be sourced and provided. Further challenges that face the team include moving 38 million cubic meters of material in order to achieve a working platform. The design must also take into account local materials and what has to be imported.
The new airport will create an opportunity for trade and it is hoped it will become a catalyst for economic generation of the area. It will also provide various forms of other opportunities associated with trade and leisure including hotels and conference facilities.
Technical Director of TPS Consult, Hanif Macci told Building Week: This is a very high profile project within Rwanda which will attract a great deal of interest throughout the country, including at all levels within the government.
TPS’s expertise is in the design of airport facilities, with previous projects including the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport and Terminal 4 at Madrid Airport.
