The $325 million renovation project is expected to take two more years to complete. Terminal B renovations include expanding and updating the ticketing areas, building a new departure level for domestic flights, and building a new arrivals hall.
The renovation aims to improve customer service, update security systems and meet the growing needs of the international and domestic airlines that use this vital terminal.
An addition to the passageway that leads from the concourse to the B-1 gate area is expected to be open by November 2009, and expanded B-2 and B-3 passageways will soon follow.
An addition to the passageway that leads from the concourse to the B-1 gate area is expected to open this month, and expanded B-2 and B-3 passageways will soon follow. The airport now features expanded hallways. These hallways will include house shops, restaurants and lounges in addition to reconfigured security check points adding more lanes.
The final phase of the makeover is expected to begin by November 2009. VRH Construction, which won the contract with a bid of $59.8 million, will install the new check-in counters, baggage handling systems and airline offices. The work is slated for completion in 2012.
The renovation project commenced in the fourth quarter of 2006 intending to convert the 36-year-old terminal to a three-deck facility from a two-level one. A 100,000 square feet ground-level parking garage has been reclaimed as terminal space. The space was unveiled in August 2009 as a domestic baggage claim area.
Domestic departures will be moved from the third level to the second over the next two years. The international departures area, which will remain on the third level, will be reconfigured.
Plans are also in place to expand Terminal A by adding a new parking garage and radically expanding the size of the first concourse to add new gates, ticketing, baggage and security areas.
