Regional civil aviation director said that the airport was planning a construction of 4,436 meters in altitude and with this construction done on the Nagqu Dagring Airport; China would be setting a world record.

The airport, planned for Nagqu Prefecture, would be 102 meters higher than that of Bamda Airport in Tibet’s Qamdo Prefecture, which has been the world’s highest airport since its completion in 1994.

The construction of the airport has been included in the Tibet’s development plan and that the committee has been working on the selection of a site for the airport. The airport construction has been planned for 2011 with a construction period of three years. It is expected to cost $263 million and cover an area of 233 to 266 hectares.

Nagqu, about 300km from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, is located in the center of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. With the airport, Nagqu, which is also on the Qinghai-Tibet railway line, is expected to become the centre of an economic hub in the plateau region.
