The objective behind the NICU improvement project is to transform the 30-years old current NICU into an up-to-date, state-of-the-art facility. The current NICU was on the cutting edge of technology, when it was built.

Presently the NICU is housed in a single room. The improvement project will create 18 individual rooms. The new design aims to make spacious rooms for the care of the babies besides accommodating their families as well.

The SMDC Foundation is organizing a fund raising campaign for the proposed upgrade, which is estimated to cost between $3 and $4 million.

SMDC Health System has hospitals and clinics in northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin and also serves parts of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
