The concourse expansion project will add six airline gates in an open-rotunda format. This is intended to double the capacity of the concourse. Additional facilities such as new food outlets, retailers and restrooms will also be added.
New Orleans Aviation Board awarded the project contract to Louisiana-based general contractor McDonnell Group. The project is being funded by passenger facility fees collected from fliers. The expansion scheme is slated for late 2011 completion.
The airport was formerly known as Moisant Field, and it is also known as Louis Armstrong International Airport and New Orleans International Airport. The airport was opened after World War II, replacing the older New Orleans Lakefront Airport.
