To be built at the University of Bolton’s Deane Road campus, the complex will house a swimming pool and leisure services, a four-story health center with urgent care, diagnostics and treatment facilities, a sports center and sports science laboratories with teaching facilities.
The University of Bolton, Bolton Council, and NHS Bolton are seeking to commission an artist to create an integrated large-scale artwork, or a number of smaller artworks that relate to each other.
The work may be in any medium and should reflect the principles of the three partners, indicating the collaborative use of the new building, which will be open to the general public and university students.
The artwork or artworks will be integrated into the design of the new building, giving the artist a unique opportunity to work alongside the architect and engineers as the project is developed.
Alan Buckingham, the University’s program leader for its masters in Public Art course, who is leading the search for the right artist, said that a short-list of artists will be selected, and these finalists will be paid a stipend of GBP800 ($1,204) to create a model of their proposal, together with a detailed budget of expenses. He adds that the total budget for the winning design should not exceed GBP50, 000 ($75,278).
The facility is slated for an early 2012 completion.
