Wishard will become one of the 10 newly constructed hospitals in America and the only one of its kind in Indiana, if it receives the LEED-Silver certification.
The project includes the construction of a 1.2 million square foot facility on a 37-acre site at the western end of the Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis campus, which will replace the existing hospital at 1001 W. 10th St. This decision to use an old urban site will also contribute to the environmental sustainability credits.
Design plan for the new hospital will include the addition of a host of ‘green’ elements. These features include pollution control during construction, energy savings through efficient design, water usage savings, outside air circulation and features for staff including bike racks, showers and designated parking for alternative fuel vehicles and high occupancy carpool and vanpool vehicles.
The project to construct the new hospital is expected to create 4,400 jobs. Certification is subject to USGBC audit upon project completion. It is expected to be unveiled at the end of 2013.
