Designed by LMN Architects, in collaboration with Vancouver-based Musson Cattell Mackey (MCM) and DA Architects + Planners, the Vancouver Convention Centre’s iconic West building was awarded LEED – Platinum certification for new construction by the Canada Green Building Council. The iconic West building was opened in April 2009.
Vancouver Convention Centre’s sustainable design features and practices include a six acre ‘living’ roof , the largest living roof in Canada; a sophisticated drainage and water recovery system; an extensive facility-wide recycling program; and a restored marine habitat built into the foundation of the building.
Other eco-friendly features are a seawater heating and cooling system that takes advantage of the adjacent seawater to produce cooling for the building during warmer months and heating in cooler months; natural light and ventilation maximized throughout the building; and local BC wood products used throughout the building.
Along with the VCCW, nine other projects were given the award in ‘The Americas’ region. ULI has been recognizing development projects in both the public and private sectors since 1979.
ULI’s Awards for Excellence celebrates the achievement of excellence in land use practice. The 1.2 million square feet structure is designed to bring together the complex ecology, vibrant local culture and urban environment.
