Designed by Australian practice Allen Jack+Cottier Architects, the structure of the western grandstand is similar to the northern grandstand at the stadium and is distinct with a curved canopy roof.
The 6000-seat grandstand is designed to boost WIN Stadium’s capacity to 23,000. The structure will accommodate ticketing, catering, media and toilet facilities, two function rooms and improved access. Retail shops and eateries along Harbour Street will be bordered by tall concrete columns.
The new two-tiered western grandstand will replace the 50-year old grandstand. Work on demolishing the existing grandstand is expected to begin in June 2010, with an expected completion by 2011.
WIN Stadium is the home venue of the St George Illawarra Dragons who play in the National Rugby League.
