The entire building is made of glass without the use of concrete, which is one of the distinct elements. The granite-floored terminal structure has central air conditioning system. The building spans 18,200 square meters and is designed to handle 1000 passengers at a time. There are 28 check-in counters, several conveyor belts and inline security checking system. Five aerobridges have also been introduced.
A 43,000 square meters apron is connected to the new concrete runway. The NITB is almost three times larger in area than the existing Bajpe Airport in Mangalore. The new terminal has also reduced the distance between Mangalore city and the airport by about seven kilometers.
The construction of INR1.5 billion ($33.3 million approx) building was completed in December 2009.
