The renovation scheme worth $13 million includes addition of a 150-seat lecture hall, number of classrooms and practice rooms, and renovations to the existing recital Hall, band room, coaching studios, music library and faculty offices.
Planned as an adaptive reuse scheme, the Clausen Hall renovation will involve eliminating some building elements while carefully reusing others. The design will be in adherence to the campus design guidelines for functionality, durability and sustainability and will be consistent with the existing brick-and-concrete aesthetic of the building. HGA will maintain the building’s contextual relationship to the campus.
According to the brief, HGA should refurbish the Recital Hall within the existing structure. The present cramped space for acoustics will be enhanced by removing the existing dropped ceiling. A penthouse will be added to increase the volume of the space. The redeveloped Recital Hall will feature new sloped floors, new variable acoustic draperies, new angled acoustic wall panels, ceiling reflectors and new support spaces such as a green room, recording booth and piano storage.
The exterior of the structure will be repaired and repainted. Improved finishes and custom graphics will increase campus visibility to the onlookers.
HGA will work in association with engineering consultants to coordinate all new energy-efficient mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Indoor climate control systems and acoustic upgrades will ensure proper sound balance. The facility’s interior upgrades will comprise recycled-content materials and low-VOC floor finishes.
The project is scheduled for completion in early 2012.
