With the prestigious green certification, Kelly Creek Elementary has become the first LEED-EB-certified school in the State of Oregon and the first LEED-EB v2009 school to be certified anywhere in the world.
The USGBC has honored the school’s continuous sustainability improvement measures guided by LEED-EB. Leonardo Academy was the LEED consultant for this project supporting the achievement of Silver Certification.
The renovated school features low-flow water closets, dual flush fixtures, aerators on all faucets, and low-flow urinals, which resulted in five LEED points and a 38% reduction in water use for a total annual savings of 162,327 gallons. The school achieved an Energy Star rating of 91 points out of a possible 100, making it eligible for the Energy Star Label.
Leonardo Academy’s Cleaner & Greener Program has enabled the facility to get documented reductions of 206 metric tons of CO2 equivalent emissions. The implementation of a green cleaning program mandated the use of 100% green cleaning products in the building and on the grounds. The playground equipments are composed of recycled plastic and aluminum, surrounded by rubber tile matting created from recycled tires. All the classrooms and offices feature eco-friendly whiteboards and Marmoleum flooring is used in the school’s entryway.
Ford Motor Company financed the eco-friendly makeover of Kelly Creek Elementary school. The school was chosen as the grand prize winner of the Educate to Escape Contest organized by the Ford to select one K-12 school for the green makeover.
