The Jeffery W. Barry Center, dedicated in December 2007, is a two-level classroom building spanning 37,000 square feet. The building at Walsh College is incorporated with recycled and environmentally sensitive materials and has the ability to capture rainwater. It also uses solar power for climate control.
The design and building practices followed ‘green’ principles related to sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality. The center gets most of its power from renewable resources, captures and filters its water, and converts waste heat into electricity. About 20% of the energy is saved through energy-efficient building insulation. Energy-efficient plumbing has been installed in the facility that reduced potable water use by 40%.
One fourth of the construction materials were locally-sourced, and more than 80% of the building’s wood was from FSC-certified forests and rapidly renewable resources.
The Jeffery W. Barry Center contains nine classrooms, three conference rooms, two seminar rooms, a 135-seat auditorium, a marketing focus group room, and a larger library.
