Strategically located within Malta’s historic Grand Harbour, the Valletta Waterfront has undergone an extensive restoration carried out by Viset Malta plc, developers and operators of the Valletta Waterfront and the Valletta Cruise Terminal.

The development of the Valletta Waterfront project was carried out over a number of years. During the first year of activity a lot of design preparations, planning sessions and activities related to the development program were made. Due to the magnitude of the project, these had to be split into a number of phases. Restoration of a 500-year-old waterfront at the Grand Harbour in Valletta was a focal point of the entire development work. The Waterfront is also currently being used as a popular venue with a concentration of upmarket bars, retail outlets and restaurants.

According to the jury, the landscape architect’s design contributions and ability to understand global cultures resulted in a revitalised and vibrant waterfront that enhanced the local quality of life, while also increasing cruise ship tourism by nearly 500%.

The Valletta Waterfront is Grand Master Pinto’s baroque wharf built in the 18th century. Viset Malta plc took over the cruise and ferry terminal operations of the waterfront following an international tender issued by the Government of Malta in 1996.

The 2010 Award of Merit from the Florida Chapter of the ASLA recognises projects that demonstrate an exemplary use of landscape architecture practices.
