The planned renovation is said to be the stadium’s most significant renovation since it was opened in 2000.
About $12 million will be invested to install the second largest HD video board in Major League Baseball, add an additional video board in left field, add an additional 1000 feet of ribbon board around the stadium and relocate the press box up one level to develop a secondary prime viewing area behind home plate. The 54-by-124-feet video board will be the second-largest in Major League Baseball, smaller than only the one in Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium.
Minute Maid Park presently features 100ft of ribbon board on each side. The additional ribbon board to be installed is intended to enhance that portion of the stadium’s technology.
The ball park renovation project, which will be started soon, is expected to be completed in time for the opening of the 2011 Astros season.
Minute Maid Park’s retractable roof technology brought open-air baseball to Houston for the first time in 35 years, with the natural grass surface and classic architecture providing Minute Maid Park, the atmosphere of the great ballparks of baseball’s Golden age. The facility was designed by HOK Sports Facilities Group and Brown & Root Services, a business unit of Halliburton Company served as construction manager.
