The new facility will be housed on the fifth and sixth floors of Ross Hall, next door to GW Hospital. More widely accessible areas will be created by converting about 35,000 square feet of ‘closed’ lab space. This has been intended to promote more research collaboration.
A major goal of the project is to attain energy efficiency. The research centre will be designed by adhering to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. It is targeting to become the latest GW building to this ‘green’ certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
Advanced heating and cooling system will be installed in the building to reduce the substantial energy use associated with research labs. The existing central utility plant at Ross Hall will be expanded. The project is scheduled for early 2013 completion.
The new facility to house researchers studying neglected infections and diseases is funded by a $15 million grant from National Institutes of Health, the largest award ever received by the university. GW will fund the remaining $20 million. The main hall of GW Medical Centre will undergo extensive renovations.
