David Chipperfield Architects won an international competition for the design of the new Peek & Cloppenburg flagship store in Vienna in 2007. The new flagship store of the international chain of fashion department stores is located in Vienna’s historic centre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The new store features six sales levels and central atrium. The structure has been designed to close the urban block and represents an abstract interpretation of traditional Viennese department stores.

The facade of the store is built of light-coloured Danube Limestone, which is a typical Viennese material. David Chipperfield has also integrated translucent glass and bronze structure to crown the atrium in the tradition of the large department stores of the 19th century. The careful selection of the materials helps in giving an enduring identity to the building within the historic context.

The Peek & Cloppenburg Flagship Store is due to open in September 2011.
