The new plaza will feature a performance platform, an illuminated marquee sign, public restrooms, a tot lot, a pony ride area and a ‘heritage walk’ with historic elements. A new area for community events including a 1,260 square feet performance platform for live entertainment will also be featured.
The historic heritage walk will be designed to serve as an educational feature and will promote current school and group tours that go through City Hall. The area to the north of the park will feature a mini orange grove and re-creations of historic stone pillars that used to be at Hollenbeck Park. Design will also retain the famous Christmas tree of the area and replace few existing trees.
The city’s redevelopment agency is funding the project with $1.3 million in public purpose bond money. The state Land and Water Conservation Fund has also granted $63,000 grant for the project. Construction is expected to begin in April 2011.
