The project is located in a forest outside Arnhem in the Netherlands. The exterior of this three-storey building is coated with brown anodised aluminium. All the floors in the building are connected by a shallow wooden staircase with the atria and light wells enabling penetration of natural light.
The rehabilitation centre building comprises offices, a clinic, sports facilities, a swimming pool, a restaurant and theatre. A multifunctional auditorium with flexible space for wheelchairs and beds are also included. The auditorium is fit for courses, meetings and shows. Groot Klimmendaal has made theatre a part of the rehabilitation process. The seating system in the auditorim can easily be moved through the air cushion system.
The Mies van der Rohe Award is the highest European distinction in architecture. It is conferred every two years by the European Union. The objectives of the award are to distinguish and reward excellence in architecture and to draw attention to the contribution by European professionals to promote new ideas and technologies.
The winner of the award will be announced on 20 June 2011.
