Spanning 900,000 square feet, construction for the facility started in 2008. It is currently expected to be complete by November 2011 with an expected opening to patients by March 2012.

The facility is designed in a way to promote health and wellness. Colour schemes and flooring have been chosen in a manner to highlight the aspect. Windows have been chosen to take advantage of natural light besides reducing noise levels. More than 40 teams of hospital leadership, physicians and staff assisted in the design of the patient care areas.

The hospital will feature more than 400 beds in all private rooms; speciality centers for heart, orthopedics, cancer, women’s and children’s services, and outpatient services; adult and pediatric trauma centers; Samaritan medical flight services; and full-service 24/7 ER with board-certified emergency physicians.

The eight-level hospital will feature Laboratory, Pharmacy, Kitchen, Facilities, and Physician parking at Ground level. First level will feature Emergency department, Imaging, Administrative offices, Dining, Fort Wayne Cardiology clinic, Outpatient cardiac services, Conference Center, Gift Shop, Future home of outpatient pediatrics clinic and Ronald McDonald House.

Second floor will include Surgical trauma and pediatric intensive care units, Operating rooms, Chapel, Cardiovascular intensive care unit and catheterization lab in Heart Institute, Endoscopy, Interventional radiology,and Pathology. The third level will have a Medical intensive care unit, Dialysis, Coronary intensive care unit and congestive heart failure unit in Heart Institute. Acute surgical care patient rooms, Inpatient therapy, and Telemetry unit in Heart Institute are featured on fourth floor while the fifth floor will feature Acute surgical care patient rooms, Fort Wayne Cardiovascular Surgeons clinic, Cardiac rehabilitation, and Pulmonary rehabilitation.

Sixth floor will have Acute medical care patient rooms while seventh floor will feature Future growth area with Samaritan offices on the eighth floor. A Helipad will be featured on the roof.
