The renovation project was a part of a big investment in the country’s two key airports. The one-year renovation programme was designed to provide fast and high quality services to passengers and airlines at the airport located in Macedonia’s major tourism centre and a UNESCO World Heritage List site.

It included the addition of a 2.000 square meter VIP lounge, a 1, 000 square meter aircraft hangar and a parking lot spanning 6,000 square metre. The terminal building and the existing parking lot, administrative building and cargo hangar were also renovated.

The other major airport in Macedonia being renovated by TAV Airports include Skopje, which will see the addition of a new terminal building, as well as expansion of the apron and runway, and increase in cargo and parking capacity. It is expected that the work at Skopje will be completed within the last quarter of 2011. Post completion, the airport will be able to handle an increase in annual passenger capacity to three million.

TAV signed a 20-year agreement with the Macedonian government in March 2010 to manage the country’s airports. It is investing €200 million ($289.6 million) in Macedonia to renovate the two airports in Skopje and Ohrid, and to build a new cargo airport in Stip.

TAV was established in 1997, as a joint venture between Tepe and Akfen Groups following the bid for the Istanbul Ataturk Airport International Terminal Contract.
