The tower has been designed by architectural firm HOK International. The design of the tower has won the ‘Autodesk Hong Kong Building Information Modeling (BIM) Award-2009′.
The new tower will be 83 metres tall, 23 metres higher than the existing tower. The new tower will have a triangular three-dimensional structure comprising soft vertices. The ATC’s look is open to interpretation and is said to resemble a spaceship hovering over or parked at the airport or a ship above the skyline. The tower will be clad in glass and steel.
New equipment with new control and monitoring systems will be installed in the tower after completion of construction with transition into the new tower expected by July 2012. The present tower will be removed to facilitate proper functioning of the airport with unhindered cross runway operations for landings and take-offs. A parallel taxi-track will also be built along the secondary runway to match it up with larger aircrafts including B747s and A330s.
Construction is scheduled to reach completion by the end of 2011.
