The 130 acre UC Davis West Village incorporates a combination of energy efficient design features with a 4MW, high efficiency SunPower solar power system making it a Zero Net Energy development. The first phase of the project includes apartment housing for 2,000 students, an education centre for Los Rios Community College, as well as recreation and study facilities. The development will also house a village square surrounded by retail units and 343 single homes for sale to faculty and staff. The Ramble Apartments and Viridian, two of the student housing components, will open in September 2011.
The Ramble includes two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments for students configured in ten courtyards positioned along a central winding pathway. The Viridian features one- and two-bedroom apartments. The 15,000 sq. ft. recreation and amenities facility provides a fitness center; conference and study areas; game and theater rooms; recreational pool, lap pool and spa. The 42,500 sq. ft. of commercial space houses neighborhood-serving retail and university offices surrounding the village square. The Community college scheduled to open in January 2012 will house the Sacramento City College Davis Center of the Los Rios Community College District.
The community’s electricity demands will be met by a 4MW solar system comprised of rooftop solar power installations and solar canopies installed in parking areas. West Village incorporates other energy conserving components, including solar reflective roof materials and radiant barrier roof sheathing, along with high efficiency light fixtures, air conditioning systems and appliances.
UC Davis West Village integrates sustainable design to reduce residents’ reliance on automobiles, limit energy consumption and enjoy the benefits of the local climate. Building designs optimize solar orientation, use energy efficient appliances and incorporate materials from renewable sources.
UC Davis West Village is the product of a public-private partnership between UC Davis and West Village Community Partnership, LLC, a joint venture led by San Francisco-based Carmel Partners with their partner Urban Villages of Denver.
