The project has been designed by Denver’s Semple Brown Design and developed by Denver-based CMC Construction. The building features a living wall composed of a vertical garden measuring 14 by 18 feet. The garden comprises a host of plants such as thyme, basil, parsley, rosemary which are utilised as ingredients for the meals.
The facility is encompassed by open areas comprising grasses and flowers, an orchard consisting of various trees like apple, apricot, cherry and plum, an outdoor vegetable and herb garden as well as an apiary. Both the garden and the orchard are fertilized using composted food waste.
The facility is equipped with a 27KW photovoltaic rooftop array which generates power for the structure. It is also fitted with north-facing clerestory windows which optimise passage of natural light thereby cutting down dependency on artificial light and preventing energy wastage. In addition, the building incorporates highly-efficient lighting units and appliances. All these measures contribute to a slash of 42% in energy consumption of the building as against traditional buildings.
