The organizers of McMillen Ice Arena have proposed to convert the ice arena into into a multipurpose community center. The organizers intend to utilize the 87,000 square feet area of the arena to build an indoor facility, which will be the largest in Fort Wayne.
The proposed Community Center will have an indoor and demountable multi-purpose athletic turf. The size of the indoor athletic turf will be comparable with the size of a full-length football field. The community center will also have three full-size indoor or removable volleyball or basketball courts, indoor playground, rock climbing wall, two-lane indoor walking track, exercise and weight rooms, expandable multipurpose rooms, a computer lab and one room with a small stage.
The cost estimated for undertaking this project is $4 million and the organizers are currently brainstorming on the avenues of drawing funds. The plan for the community center is subject to approval. If the plan is approved and receives funds, the organizers plan to start the project in 2012 and intend to complete it in a span of three or four years.
